Joan Cassis, Untitled (Elderly American Woman with Braid, Mary), 1986
I tear up every time I see this photo. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of the elders within my own family, or perhaps it’s because I don’t know her story. I can’t speak to her and learn more about her life. Why did she participate in the photo shoot? What was she trying to convey to those that may stumble upon it? What are her celebratory life moments? What was she thinking about, in order to look so peaceful and confident?
I absolutely love this image and I think that it showcases the true beauty of her story, whatever it may be.
